Kissing in public can be fun, but it can make some people uncomfortable. In most places, you probably won't get more than a scowl for too much public affection. Knowing what's at stake before kissing in public will ensure you're happy and content to show some affection.

Keep clean. If you want to kiss your partner in public, you can. That doesn't mean you can turn that kiss into a smooch. Use some discretion when kissing in public.[1]
- Kissing in public is fine as long as you don't overdo it. Don't use your tongue or put your hands under your partner's clothes. Anything other than a closed-mouth kiss can make people uncomfortable.[2]

Be aware of your surroundings.Kissing in public is not always acceptable. Even if you think no one is paying attention to you, it might not be a good time to start kissing.[3]
- Just because you're in a dark movie theater, for example, doesn't mean it's okay to start making out. You can get away with a quick peck on the cheek, but don't peck it because you think no one can see you.[4]
- Avoid kissing in crowded places like restaurants or supermarkets. An exception to this rule are nightclubs. It is common to see people kissing and dancing in nightclubs. If you're out and fancy a kiss, chances are you're free.[5]

Be aware of societal mores. In some countries, kissing in public is a serious crime. In most Western countries, you only have to worry about a glare or two if someone disapproves of your kiss. But in places like India, kissing in public can get you in big trouble.[6][7]
- If you are planning to travel with your partner, find out about some of the customs before you leave. Look for laws on all forms of public affection. Don't limit your search to just kissing. In China, for example, it is also forbidden to hold hands between couples.[8]
- Also consider how comfortable you feel with the other person. For example, kissing at the end of a first date today might seem a bit premature and inappropriate.[9]
4
Make sure it's consensual. No matter where you are, respect the boundaries of others. Don't force a kiss on someone who doesn't want to kiss you. Nobody appreciates unwanted physical advances.
- Don't use public affection as an ego boost. Kissing in public should mean sharing a kiss with someone you enjoy spending time with. Don't use this to tell the rest of the world that your partner is "taken."[10]

Find out what makes you uncomfortable. If your partner pulls away when you try to kiss in public, ask them about it. Be sensitive to their feelings and respect their opinions. Don't make them feel like they need to kiss you in public.[11]
- Just because your partner doesn't want to kiss you in public doesn't mean they're ashamed of you. It could be something as simple as not wanting to kiss in a certain place. For example, they may not want to kiss at work or in front of their friends.[12][13]
- If you still want to show your partner affection, things like hugging them, sitting closer to them, or even touching your hands in public may be more comfortable for them.[14]
2
Escuchar. There can be several reasons why your partner doesn't want to kiss in public. Some reasons are difficult to talk about. Maybe they haven't gotten much love in previous relationships or they feel like it's a private matter.[15]
- When he's done, say, "I understand why you feel that way." Then share your version of the problem with your partner. Don't deny your feelings, but try to find out the underlying reasons for the problem.[sixteen]
- Be sure to maintain eye contact to show that you are present and involved in what they are saying.[17]
3
Try to communicate.Ask what your partner likes to do in public. Reassure them that you're not trying to kiss in a large crowd.[18]
- If you agree and decide that it's okay to hold hands and kiss each other on the cheek, respect those boundaries. Don't break your partner's trust by doing more than they like.[19]
4
Don't let privacy get compromised. When you're alone, let yourself go. Don't let the issue of public affection stand in the way of mutual commitment.[20]
